3 Things to NEVER do While Exercising

Here are 3 pet peeves of mine where people are just wasting their time at the gym... I can't tell you how many times I see people sabotaging their results by doing these useless things while attempting to workout:

1. Talking on the cell phone while working out --

I'm not kidding... I've even seen people talking on their cell phone while doing ab exercises on a mat. I can't help but laugh when I see this.

But it's sad if you think about it. Are you going to tell me these people can't leave their cell phone in the car for 45 minutes so that they can actually concentrate on their workout and put their mind into what their doing?

If you want results, cell phones need to stay in the car. Anyone who can't get away from their cell phone for 45 minutes needs to re-evaluate priorities in their life.

After all, what did they do 10 or 15 years ago when they didn't have a cell phone? I'm sure they were able to get an uninterrupted workout at the gym back in the non-cell days.

2. Reading a magazine or newspaper while working out on a treadmill, exercise bike, or elliptical machine --

This is another worthless waste of time. If you can actually read while exercising, then you're not working out hard enough, and not creating the mind-body connection during exercise that is needed to get the best results.

Have you ever noticed that all of the people on the cardio machines reading magazines are usually the ones with the worst bodies? And by contrast, the people actually training hard using resistance training (weights) are the ones with the best bodies... take a look around and I think you'll notice the trend too!

3. Watching TV while working out on a cardio machine --

Same concept as the reading while working out... If you're distracted by TV, then your mind is simply not in the game enough to get good results. Keeping focus on what your muscles are doing, working intensely, and maintaining that mind-body connection are what will create the best bodies.

So, if you want results, throw away the newspaper, get off the boring cardio machines, and actually do something that will change your body, such as:

A unique trick to end cravings for junk food or sweets

If you are having trouble with over-eating, keeping your portions under control, or with sugar cravings - then please read this entire email.

First, here is the simple truth. Most of us KNOW that we need to eat right if we want to stand a chance at losing body fat...

But for most of us, eating right is just not that simple. We know what to do, but we don't always do it... right?

This isn't your fault. Recent research points to fact that self control just isn't programmed into our genes. We evolved when food was scarce, so our natural instinct is to load up whenever we can.

The problem now is that food (and especially junk food) is more than abundant everywhere we look.

The final nail in the coffin is that just one act of self control (will power) causes us to lose control in other areas. So if life were all peaches and cream, will power might work. But once other stressors enters your awareness, it makes it doubly hard to stay away from those chocolate chip cookies!

However, there is hope.

A while back, I recommended a specific medical hypnosis program ( ) that has been shown to help you eliminate food cravings, without having to think about it.

Which salad dressings are unhealthy or healthy?

Just another tip today to help you eat healthier and avoid common food choice mistakes...

Most salad dressings that you buy at the grocery store or get at most restaurants are pure junk...

Although some salad dressings are high in sugar or high fructose corn syrup, probably the main problem with most salad dressings is that they are made with highly refined and processed oils... usually refined soybean oil (or other mostly polyunsaturated refined oils). These oils are inflammatory to the body and also too high in omega-6 fatty acids.

Even the dressings that claim to be "healthy" at the store are usually made with highly refined canola oil... but there's not much healthy about that either (despite the marketing of canola oil as healthy).

The solution to this is NOT to avoid any oils at all in salad dressings... remember that healthy fats are actually important for helping you to absorb a lot of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from the vegetables in your salad. And I'm simply not a fan at all of most "fat-free" products as they usually have extra sugars and other junk.

The only way around this is to make your own home-made salad dressings instead of buying the junk at the grocery store, and add your own healthy oils.

Although most "fat-free" products are typically full of junk, I like to try to find an organic fat-free balsamic salad dressing or red wine vinegar dressing, and then I add half of the container to a new bottle and fill the remainder with a mixture of extra-virgin olive oil, Udo's Choice EFA Oil (can be found at health food stores... if not, just use only olive oil), and organic balsamic or red wine vinegar (and a few extra herbs and spices if you wish).

This way, you're in control and making a salad dressing using healthy oils instead of the processed refined soybean oils that almost all commercial salad dressings use.

My Iceland Adventure Trip

Check out some of these cool pics below from my trip to Iceland... It's quite a beautiful country.

If you ever visit, and few interesting things to keep in mind:

1. Beware of trying their traditional "putrefied shark meat"... traditional Icelandic cuisine that takes shark meat and lets it rot in the ground for up to 9 months before they eat it. I like just about anything, but this was downright disgusting!

I heard from a friend though that the Puffin (another unusual Icelandic food choice) was pretty good.

2. If you go out for the Reykjavik nightlife (which goes strong until 6 or 7 am), you'll notice that they seem to be obsessed with breaking bottles all over the city every couple minutes throughout the entire night. Yet miraculously, by 10am, the streets are spotlessly clean as city workers clean up the streets almost immediately every morning. Weird.

Alright, to the pics...

Iceland has some amazing waterfalls... this is a glacial meltwater river

more majestic waterfalls... I hiked to the top of these, which was a pretty intense 5-10 min climb!

Here we are hiking up the edge of a huge glacier... the black stuff is volcanic ash from past eruptions in the area. As the ice melts, it creates deep cracks and ravines in the ice surface that can be deadly if you fall into one.

snowmobiling on a glacier that covers a volcano! The volcano has been overdue to erupt for years according to locals. We were just glad it didn't erupt while we were snowmobiling on it!

Here we are caving through cave formations that were left from lava flows in the past.

some places have landscape that look more like another planet than anything you'd see on earth. This is broken up rock fields from lava flows that get covered with thick moss over the years.

More scenic waterfalls.

I wish I had gotten some pics from underwater when we scuba dove the Silfra Ravine. It's one of the clearest water dive spots in the world with over 300 feet of underwater visibility! It was an amazing view underwater with bluish water and steep rock cliffs on either side of you in the ravine.

And lastly, probably one of the most amazing things I saw on this trip was on the flight... we ended up flying directly over the southern edge of Greenland, and it looked like another planet!

It was one of the most amazing views I've ever seen from the plane looking down over Greenland... there are huge mountains with massive glaciers in between, along with lagoon-type waterways that connect to the ocean... and there's big icebergs all over the place in the lagoons and in the ocean surrounding Greenland. It's definitely a sight to see!
